AI-Powered Guidance for University Transfers

Overview

Transferring between universities can be one of the most confusing and stressful parts of a student’s academic journey. Requirements vary from school to school, and students are often left to decipher complex credit equivalencies, GPA thresholds, and course articulation agreements on their own.

To address this challenge, I led the product design for EddyAI for Students, an intelligent guidance platform designed to help students navigate the transfer process with confidence. Powered by AI, EddyAI provides tailored recommendations, real-time eligibility insights, and clear next steps for students looking to continue their education at another institution.

The Challenge

Students face fragmented and inconsistent information when trying to understand how their existing credits transfer between schools. Counselors often manage large caseloads, leaving little time for one-on-one guidance. The result: missed opportunities, stalled applications, and frustration that can prevent students from completing their degree.

Our goal was to design an intuitive experience that:

  • Simplified the transfer process into clear, actionable steps

  • Provided accurate, data-driven insights personalized to each student

  • Integrated seamlessly into the existing EdVisorly app ecosystem

  • Scaled efficiently across partner universities

The Solution

EddyAI for Students combines conversational AI with a student-centered UX to demystify the transfer experience.

1. Intelligent Guidance

Students can chat directly with EddyAI, which uses natural language processing to understand their goals, analyze their transcripts, and suggest transfer pathways based on real articulation data.

2. Transcript Evaluation System

Behind the scenes, we designed a detailed evaluation tool that processes academic transcripts, mapping completed courses to transfer equivalents at target institutions. Figma prototypes were used to demonstrate how this system breaks down complex data into visual, digestible components for students.

3. Beta Release & Feedback Loop

The beta release introduced these features directly within the EdVisorly app. Early feedback from both students and advisors validated the concept’s usability and revealed opportunities for refining AI responses and contextual explanations. Also for creating custom experiences on individual school platforms. Recently the AI chat experience has been made available as an embedded customized widget for individual university websites.

My Role

As Design Director, I:

  • Defined the product vision and UX strategy for EddyAI’s student-facing experience

  • Directed end-to-end design in Figma, from early wireframes to high-fidelity prototypes

  • Collaborated with AI engineers to design conversation flows and intent mapping

  • Partnered with product and university stakeholders to ensure data accuracy and compliance

Design Process

  1. Discovery & Research

    • Interviewed students, advisors, and registrars to map transfer pain points

    • Synthesized findings into journey maps that illustrated emotional and cognitive friction

  2. Ideation & Prototyping

    • Developed wireframes to explore conversational UX and data visualization patterns

    • Integrated feedback from cross-functional teams before scaling to hi-fi design

  3. System Integration

    • Worked with engineering to connect AI logic with transcript evaluation APIs

    • Designed modular components to fit EdVisorly’s design system

  4. Testing & Refinement

    • Conducted user testing with students and enrollment teams

    • Improved clarity of results screens and recommendation pathways based on usability feedback

Impact

  • Significant reduction in transfer confusion and counselor intervention time

  • Positive feedback from partner universities citing higher student clarity and confidence

By humanizing a deeply technical process, EddyAI empowered students to take control of their academic futures—bridging the gap between AI and meaningful educational guidance.

EddyAI demonstrates how artificial intelligence, when designed with empathy and purpose, can remove barriers in education. As it has been rolled out schools are giving positive feedback and looking forward to further developing the tool. By aligning technology with student needs, we built not just a smarter tool but a more supportive path to success.
